The Drums

I went and saw Tao: Martial Art Of Drum last night at QPAC with my father and it was sensational. I’ve always liked drumming and in particular marching band drum lines and Taiko. These guys and girls were all Japanese and all the drums were proper Taiko style. They had 3 drums that would have had a face about 1.2m in diameter and were hitting them with what looked exactly like a baseball bat minus the knob at the bottom to stop the bat swinging free of your hands. and these things punched the air out of your lungs somewhat let me tell you. Every number was entertaining, even when they did a Taiko Haka [comete comete, NZ rugby style]. i don’t know if they were uninformed or being parodious. i chose the latter to at least enjoy being assailed by a Taiko driven haka.
